The climate in Spain varies greatly depending on the region. In general, Spain has a Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and mild winters, but there are also areas with a continental climate and areas with a maritime climate.

During the summer months, temperatures in Spain can rise sharply, especially inland. In the south of Spain, such as Andalusia, temperatures can be high. It is usually a bit cooler on the coast and there is often a breeze. In winter it is generally mild with temperatures around 15-18°C, except in the mountains where it can get colder and even snow.

In addition to the wonderful climate, Spain is known for, among other things:

  • Spanish cuisine, with specialties such as paella, tapas, churros, gazpacho, sangria and cava.
  • Dance, Spaniards like to dance anyway, but the really typical Spanish dances are flamenco and pasodoble.
  • Soccer, with some important clubs such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and a successful national football team (known as ‘La Roja’).
  • Siesta, the ‘lunch break’. Although it is becoming less and less common in major cities, you will see that many businesses and shops still close their doors between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
  • They can party! Spain has a rich tradition of celebrations and festivals, including Fallas in Valencia, La Tomatina in Buñol and many religious holidays.

Spain is of course popular for its Costas, each of which has its own characteristics in terms of nature and sights. An overview (in order of allocation clockwise):

  • Costa Brava –  Located in the northeast of Spain, it is known for its rugged coastline, picturesque villages and beautiful beaches.
  • Costa Dorada – located in the southeast of Catalonia, is known for its golden sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
  • Costa Barcelona – officially not a Costa, but part of Costa del Maresme and Costa del Garraf – known for its beautiful beaches and bustling seaside resorts.
  • Costa Valencia – officially Costa del Azahar – is located in the Valencia region, known for its  wide sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages.
  • Costa Blanca – located in the Valencia region, is known for beautiful beaches, beautiful bays and nature and a lively nightlife.
  • Costa Cálida – located in the Murcia region, is known for its beautiful beaches and thermal baths.
  • Costa de Almería – located in Andalusia, is known for its pristine beaches and impressive rock formations.
  • Costa Tropical – located in Andalusia, is known for its tropical climate and beautiful beaches.
  • Costa del Sol – located in Andalusia, is known for its sunny climate, beautiful beaches and bustling seaside resorts.
  • Costa de la Luz – located in Andalusia, is known for its pristine beaches and natural beauty.
  • Costa de Galicia – located in the northwest of Spain, is known for its rugged coastline and picturesque fishing villages.
  • Costa Vasca – located in the Basque Country, is known for its beautiful beaches and spectacular cliffs.
  • Costa Verde – located in the north of Spain, is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful natural surroundings.
  • Costa de Cantabria – located in the north of Spain, is known for its picturesque coves and crystal clear waters.

Spain is divided into 17 autonomous regions, namely:

  • Andalusia: located in the south of Spain and known for its flamenco, white villages, beaches and tapas.
  • Aragon: located in the northeast of Spain and known for its castles, mountains, ski resorts and vineyards.
  • Asturias: located in the north of Spain and known for its green landscapes, mountains, beaches and cider.
  • Balearic Islands: archipelago located in the Mediterranean Sea and consisting of the islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, which are known for their beaches, nightlife and water sports.
  • País Vasco: located in the north of Spain and known for its pintxos (tapas), the Euskara language, traditions and beautiful coastline.
  • Canary Islands: archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of the seven islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, known for their beaches, volcanoes, water sports and mild climate.
  • Cantabria: located in the north of Spain and known for its green landscapes, mountains, caves and beaches.
  • Castilla y León: located in the north of Spain and known for its medieval castles, churches, monasteries and wine.
  • Castilla-La Mancha: located in the center of Spain and known for its mills, castles, vineyards and traditional culture.
  • Catalonia: located in the northeast of Spain and known for its modern architecture, gastronomy, beaches, mountains and the city of Barcelona.
  • Extremadura: located in western Spain and known for its medieval monasteries, castles, national parks and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Cáceres.
  • Galicia: located in the northwest of Spain and known for its seafood, beaches, pilgrimage routes and the city of Santiago de Compostela.
  • La Rioja: located in the north of Spain and known for its vineyards, medieval villages, castles and hiking trails.
  • Madrid: the capital of Spain, located in the center of the country and known for its culture, gastronomy, nightlife and museums.
  • Murcia: located in the southeast of Spain and known for its beaches, coastal towns, natural parks and the Mar Menor lagoon.
  • Navarra: located in the north of Spain and known for its medieval castles, traditions, vineyards and the city of Pamplona.
  • Valencia: located in eastern Spain and known for its beaches, orange groves, medieval towns, art and science.
